The word currency comes from the Middle English term curraunt, meaning ‘in circulation.’ So, a currency is simply an item that can be traded in circulation to receive something else. While at first humans may have traded food, weapons, and other materials as types of currency, we eventually graduated to have an established currency in the form of money.
