Retry Correct Incorrect Six years after Richard Berry first recorded “Louie, Louie” with his band The Pharaohs in 1957, garage rock pioneers The Kingsmen would record a version that shot to number two on the Billboard charts in December 1963. According to The New Yorker, the only microphone available to lead singer Jack Ely was hanging seven feet over his head, which made him hard to understand. This both accidentally defined the sound of garage rock in the ’60s and made the band the subject of a fruitless FBI investigation for obscenity.
