Tom Waits originally wrote “Downtown Train” for his acclaimed Rain Dogs album, but Billboard reported that Rod Stewart’s cover version peaked at number three on the U.S. Hot 100. In addition to also topping the rock and adult contemporary singles charts, the cover secured a Grammy nomination. However, it also created years of animosity between Stewart and Bob Seger, who told Stewart he had recorded a version of the song before Stewart’s came out.
