According to UDiscoverMusic, the Ed Cobb-penned Gloria Jones song “Tainted Love” was never a big hit. Nonetheless, it became popular enough in the British “northern soul” club scene to inspire Soft Cell to rework the song into a slowed-down, darker sound with added synthesizers. The results not only topped the charts in the U.K. but in five other countries as well.
