As PBS outlined, Roberta Flack heard Lori Lieberman’s “Killing Me Softly With His Song” while flying from Los Angeles to New York in the early ’70s. This led her to start touring her own version until Quincy Jones said, “Ro, don’t sing that doggone song no more until you record it.” Once she did, the results would top the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks and indirectly give The Fugees a number-one hit when they sampled it.
