According to Vanity Fair, Cuban composer, bandleader, and mambo pioneer Dámaso Pérez Prado first composed the “Mambo No. 5” instrumental in 1949, just before mambo became a phenomenon in the United States. 50 years later, German artist Lou Bega would rework the kernel of Prado’s work into an infectious ode to womanizing. That move paid off, and his version hit number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts throughout Europe, including in his home country.
