Although Cat Stevens (now known as Yusuf Islam) would eventually record his own version of “The First Cut Is The Deepest,” the BBC reported that he first sold the song to former Ike and Tina Turner backup singer P.P. Arnold in 1967. But while it put her on the U.K. singles chart, it would eventually become a number-one hit in the U.K. for Rod Stewart, and the Sheryl Crow version topped three different Billboard charts in the U.S. in 2003.
