It is said that the first person to sail around the world was Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. He set sail from Spain in 1519 but was killed before completing the journey. The expedition continued, and, in 1522, one of his ships returned safely back to Spain with 18 out of the original 260 crewmen.
