On September 3, 1928, Alexander Fleming was sorting Petri dishes filled with bacterial cultures when he noticed one had an area free from bacteria thanks to the byproduct of a patch of mold called Penicillium notatum. Once other scientists figured out how to extract and use this byproduct, it heralded a new age of antibiotics.
